Colorado Press Association 2012 High School Student Internship Program

If you are a high school student and would like to intern at your hometown newspaper during the summer of 2012, you are invited to apply for a stipend through the Colorado Press Association (CPA) Internship Program.

Up to ten students will be selected for the 2012 summer program. Participants complete a 10-week or 80 hour (minimum) internship and receive a $500 stipend at the conclusion of their internship.

The program is designed to complement your journalism class experiences and your work on your high school newspaper. Internships are great opportunity for students interested in a newspaper career to get first hand experience and can involve reporting, photography, page design, ad design, advertising sales, new media, etc. Since the first year of the program in 1996, over 100 high school students have participated and interned at newspapers across Colorado.

Stipends are provided through the CPA’s Scholarship Fund at The Denver Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.

If you would like to participate in the program:

• Contact the publisher or editor of your hometown newspaper to discuss the possibility of completing an internship. If an interview is required, we encourage you to bring your resume — including samples of your work and a reference letter from your high school newspaper adviser or journalism teacher — to the meeting.

• Establish goals for a 10 week or 80 hour (minimum) internship with the publisher or the person who will be your supervisor to maximize your learning opportunities.

• Obtain a letter of agreement that states that the newspaper is willing to host you as an intern for 10 weeks during the summer of 2012. The agreement is required to ensure that you and the newspaper enjoy a successful internship.

To Apply:

Submit the following items in one packet to The Denver Foundation:

  1. Short cover letter explaining why you would like to participate in an internship

  2. Copy of the letter of agreement from newspaper publisher/editor

  3. One letter of reference, preferably from your newspaper advisor or a journalism teacher

  4. Clips or samples of your best work (at least three, maximum six, do not send originals). *All pages, INCLUDING CLIPS/PHOTOS, must be printed one-sided and submitted on 8 1⁄2 x 11” paper so that they can be duplicated for selection committee members. Pages that are not submitted in this format will not be forwarded to the selection committee and may cause your application to be considered incomplete and then declined. Do not use staples or binders other than paper clips.

  5. A completed copy of the Internship Application.
