Why are Public notices in newspapers important?

Colorado taxpayers have grown accustomed to finding public notice information in community newspapers and on community newspaper websites.

Taxpayers receive a variety of benefits from newspaper publication of such notices:

  • Consistent and on-going third-party verification that the required reports are made available to the public.
  • Newspapers provide a permanent archive of the reports that can be readily found by any member of the public.
  • On a statewide level, citizens are able to research all legal notices published in Colorado newspapers in one centralized, searchable database.
  • Such public notification is the least expensive form of advertising available in newspapers and government rates are set by law. In counties with more than one newspaper, government may require newspapers to bid.
