Our HistoryWho we are... The Colorado Press Association was founded in Denver on Aug. 7, 1878 as the State Press Association of Colorado. As stated in the bylaws: "The objects of this association are to promote the general interests of daily and weekly newspapers, the improvement of their editorial and business methods and the advancement of their usefulness and influence in the public interest; to engage in and otherwise promote research in the newspaper publishing field and to make available to its members the results of such research; and to encourage constantly higher standards of ethics in the newspaper profession, thereby fostering the dissemination of information vital to the public welfare." Membership in Colorado Press means a newspaper becomes part of two corporations: the nonprofit Association, which is financed primarily by Regular and Associate Member dues, and the Colorado Press Service, a for-profit corporation that handles all the sales projects. The members elect a president, vice president/president-elect, secretary and treasurer, and six directors, who serve on the boards for both corporations. The immediate past president serves as chairman of the board. Officers and directors take office at the annual meeting during the CPA February Convention. In October 1995, the Colorado Press Assocation Foundation was established. Each year, it funds college scholarships, high school internships, high school newspaper adviser internships, and a unique guest publishership for people wanting to keep up with changes in the industry. Foundation programs are funded through a two-cent-per-subscriber campaign and donations to an endowment fund. The nine-member board, working through The Denver Foundation, determines funding allocations. What we do...
